Tubok and Kaak (pronounced: Too-bok and Cah-ack) The Argus Pheasant (Argusianus argus) and The Common Crow (Corvus enca)
Our love for Borneo and everything it represents, has inspired us to produce this series. Rita and Azizah spent many formative childhood years in Sabah and Sarawak and remain closely tied to the area today. The first in the Bornean series; Kenyalang (named by our sisters in Sarawak) was named after the Hornbill. A truly unique and magnificent bird that is synonymous with all things related to Borneo. The birds found in the rich and diverse tropical rainforests of the area, the Argus Pheasant and the Common Crow, inspired the second wrap in the series. Not only is the Argus Pheasant truly beautiful, with brown-plumage, blue head and neck, red upper breast and legs, it’s behavior or “display” is incredible. Announcing himself with loud calls and dances to reveal hundreds of “eyes” to his female. Looking at the wrap produced, you can possibly understand more of the design concept in the blue and yellow portions of the wrap. Now the common crow or slender billed crow is much less of a “display” bird and is very sociable, almost always found with other crows, flying from tree to tree enjoying its others company. It is almost entirely black and sleek, forming the background to the wrap.
Unsurprisingly, these rather scientific features of the bird’s looks and behavior has not gone unnoticed and has been captured by a truly lovely fable commonly retold in Sabah and Sarawak. Anyone with children knows how important reading and retelling of stories, fables and folktales can be. For both Rita and Azizah, bedtime stories are part of their routine with their children.
With every wrap purchased, BBS has reproduced this fable. It’s a humble, short written version of the fable “Tubok and Kaak” with added scientific names and colouring sheets… Our dream is that this wrap grows to become part of your family and that you too enjoy the fable and all the lessons that can be learnt from it.
